Weekly Photo Challenge: Ocean

Rowers

We saw these rowers on Kailua Beach in Oahu as they prepared their boats & equipment for launch, and then watched them as they moved swiftly into the waves.

late afternoon in Kailua

I like this picture because I love the way the sunlight bursts through the clouds and how it creates light and shadow in the late afternoon.

watery grave

I chose this picture for the theme of Ocean because it is the site of where the USS Arizona sank during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Rusted parts of the ship are still visible just below the surface of the water and I thought of the men whose graves lie below. In the memorial, there is also a list of the men who survived, but chose to be buried when they died here with their comrades.

Napili Shores Resort, Maui

This picture was a little washed out in color, because I shot directly into the bright sunlight. I thought it looked better in black and white/sepia tones, giving the feeling of an old photograph. But in fact, it was taken at a modern resort in Maui, where there is a famous restaurant called the Gazebo – their pancakes with coconut syrup are out of this world!! I took the picture while we were waiting to be seated in the restaurant.

black sand beach on the Road to Hana, Maui

With only two days to spend on Maui, a trip along the northern coast called the Road to Hana was a must. One of the places we stopped was this black sand beach. The beach actually has black pebbles, but as you get closer to the water, they become coarse black sand. I had been on a black sand beach on the Big Island several decades ago and I enjoyed wiggling my bare toes in the coarse sand on both of them!
