Joana examines her make-up in the mirror, turning her face left and right to assure its perfection. No flaws, no gaps. Yes! She is going to be the star of the show, the queen of carnaval. No one has seen this innovation before: the escola de samba will parade at midnight, awing people with its luminescent brilliance.

When they had found out their escola had been relegated to the middle of the night – the hope is to enter the avenue in front of the judges at dawn or a little after – they had been disappointed. Then Sergio, the costume designer, suggested this. Why not have all the members paint themselves from head to toe with glow-in-the-dark glitter paint? It certainly will command attention as the dancers in the dark show appear as ethereal beings, floating in the air, defying gravity. The women will wear transparent, flowy tunics, fluttering like gossamer wings. Their escola de samba will take the grand prize by wowing the judges.

And Joana will be the main attraction.
